World-famous entrepreneur, author and domestic goddess Martha Stewart has offered shoe lovers tips on how to keep footwear looking great.

Having a cobbler put sole guards – thin pieces of rubber – on leather-soled shoes works to keep them waterproof and protected, Stewart wrote in the Seattle Times.

She added that waterproofing suede and leather shoes also helps their durability, but advised to use a non-silicone spray for lighter shades as they can stain as a result of the treatment.

Ms Stewart also wrote that, storage-wise, you should keep shoes free of dust, polish them after three or four wears and clean shoes which have been dirtied before putting the back into the wardrobe.

As for storage, the TV personality recommended flannel shoe bags rather than stifling plastic or cardboard boxes and using shoe and toe shapers between wearing.
