Athlete to walk 300 miles barefoot for charity
A young athlete is planning a 300-mile walk to raise awareness of children living in poverty, it has been reported.
However, he will be completing the distance barefoot, to highlight the plight of the 300 million children worldwide who do not own a pair of shoes.
Nigerian-born Manny Ohonme was inspired to complete the impressive feat due to his own background.
After a missionary gave him a pair of sports shoes when he was nine years old, Mr Ohonme began playing basketball and subsequently earned an athletics scholarship from a university in America.
The walk is set to last for two weeks, will start in Charlotte and finish in Atlanta and involves a “barefoot breakfast” which will see the attendance of some big names in basketball.
A total of $500,000 as well as 100,000 pairs of shoes will hopefully be donated.
Another shoe-related fund raiser, Walk a Mile in Her Shoes, is a global event designed to raise awareness of violence against women.
