US president-elect Barack Obama may be about to step into the shoes of George Bush and take over the running of one of the worlds most powerful nations, but he needs some new footwear first, it has been claimed.

Michelle, the politicians wife, has revealed that Obama is more laid back about his appearance than running for president.

During an interview with CNN, she stated that when she met her husband "he was not into fashion but he was very much into issues".

She added that he "still has the same pants and shirts that he had when we got married" and that his shoes leave a lot to be desired.

Upon inspecting his footwear, she said: "I looked at them the other day and I said, you need new shoes".

Its not the first time recently that footwear has proved to be an issue for a top US politician.

During a press conference in Iraq last month, George Bush dodged a pair of shoes thrown at him by a journalist protesting against the US occupation of his country.
