Walk in the footsteps of a peaceful leader
The sandals worn by of one of the worlds most famous icons – Mahatma Gandhi – have been put on sale.
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, commonly known as Mahatma, was an active member of the Indian Independence movement when the country was under British colonial rule.
As he did not own a great deal of possessions, the sandals could fetch a handsome price at auction.
Alongside the brown leathery footwear, a pair of his trademark round glasses will be auctioned. Also going under the hammer is a pocket watch, which he passed on to his niece before being assassinated and dying in her arms in 1948.
The auction is scheduled to take place in New York through Antiquorum Auctioneers and the items are expected to collectively raise around £30,000.
Gandhi is famous for putting on his sandals and leading a 240-mile march in 1930 to peacefully protest against a British-imposed tax on salt.
