Women in the UK have around £22 billion worth of clothes, shoes and special items stashed away in their homes, it has been revealed.

A survey conducted by Direct Line Home Insurance found that 82 per cent of women have a collection of products that only see the light of day on extra special occasions.

Of these, 58 per cent of ladies said they have clothes and shoes in their wardrobes that they wear only for the most special of events.

A further 52 per cent said they have stunning jewellery hidden away to compliment their best clothes, while 17 per cent said they harbour expensive beauty creams and make-up for similar occasions.

Reasons for hiding their treasured items away include them being given as a gift and fear of damage, although many only use them once or twice a year.

Another shoe-related poll undertaken by Miss Bimbo September found that almost half of British women have bought shoes that are too small in the past because they liked them.
