Nike trainers and Van Halen in legal tete-a-tete
Guitarist Eddie Van Halen is suing Nike over the design of the companys new Dunk Low trainers.
The rocker claims that the shoes make use of a colour scheme he trademarked on his Frankenstrat guitar – a hybrid Fender and Gibson built in the 1970s.
It features white and black criss-cross striped pattern on a red background which was licensed for a pair of Van Halen trainers released earlier this year.
The new black Nike Dunk Lows have a red trim finished with black and white crossing lines.
A spokesperson for Nike stated that the trainer design “is not substantially similar to any of the Van Halen designs” before adding that the sportsbrand “has not referenced the Van Halen name or image as part of any marketing campaign or promotional material associated with the shoe“.
In related news, the launch of limited edition Nike trainers designed by Kanye West caused queues to form outside shops in London last week.
