Nike – UKs most eco-friendly shoe brand?
Nikes Reuse-A-Shoe has the biggest eco kudos in trainers land, according to one publication.
Given that trainers last up to 1,000 years in landfill, the Guardian looked into the alternative steps shoppers can take to ensure the shoes they buy are ethically sound – concluding that there is not much competition for Nikes environmentally friendly model.
While Adidas runs a staff recycling programme, Nike seems to have the best of the batch as not only do its Trash Talk shoes uses scrap-ground foam from factory production, its Reuse-A-Shoe scheme sees trainers collected from in-store banks in nationwide outlets remanufactured into resin for Nike Grind-branded sports courts.
“Most trainer manufacturers have a sustainable offering in more holistic materials, including recycled plastic and even a bit of hemp,” said the newspaper.
However, Nike could soon have a competitor in the form of rival New Balance, whose 70 trainer blends at least 50 per cent eco-friendly materials with environmentally-sound production methods to ensure it generates as little waste as possible.
