Don Masson has confessed that the best advice he was ever given was by Raich Carter – who offered the guidance wearing Hush Puppies shoes.

Masson – who described playing for Scotland in the 1978 World Cup and finishing runners-up with Queens Park Rangers in the First Division in 1976 as some of his career highlights – told the Times that Carter, a manager at the time, spoke to him when he was working as ground staff at Middlesbrough.

The team was playing a practice match and the former Manchester United and Scotland captain was wearing Hush Puppies shoes, recalled Masson.

Now a member of the Notts County Former Players Association, he stopped the game and got the ball and kicked it with his left foot into the right wing and said: “Look, that ball will never get tired. Make it do the work. Only beat people when you need to. Make the ball do the work,” Masson remembered.
