Hush Puppies shoes named after corn fritters
The company that created Hush Puppies shoes has revealed where the brand name came from.
Wolverine sales manager Jim Muir thought of the idea on a trip to Tennessee, where he sat down to a dinner of catfish and deep-fried corn fritters with friends.
When he discovered that the fritters were called hush puppies and used by farmers to quieten their boisterous canine companions, Mr Muir was inspired, because tired feet were known as barking dogs at that point in history.
The brands trademark was thus born on July 1st 1958, including the logo, which is now one of the most recognised in the world.
This was created when the firm purchased the photo of the basset hound for $50 (£30) and began using it on its shoe boxes and in advertising, according to the Rockford Independent.
Hush Puppies shoes were launched in the UK one year after making their US debut.
