Older ladyWearing trainers around the home instead of going barefoot this summer could help to prevent falls in older people, research has suggested.

According to a study from Bostons Institute for Aging Research, cited by the Chicago Tribune, people aged 64 to 97 who keep athletic shoes on are less likely to fall in the home than those who walk around barefoot or with socks on.

Dr Marian Hannan said although more than 20 per cent of elderly people do not wear shoes around the home, wearing trainers with ankle support and good grips could help them to stay on their feet, potentially reducing injuries.

She explained trainers are ideal because more of the shoe is in contact with the ground, allowing for better balance.

While trainers may be useful for older people, slippers may be more a comfortable option for relaxing in the evenings.

A good summer pair could be the Padders Pamela Touch Fasten Slipper, which has straps so the foot cannot slip out and also has a rubbery sole for excellent traction.
